Introducing My First Blog: Here’s Why…

Many of us passed Life Orientation, but we’re failing dismally at life.

Why? Because most of the things we learned in Life Orientation aren’t practical for the real challenges we face daily.

Do you relate to this statement? We studied Life Orientation as a subject in school—a series of topics that seemed relevant at the time. But how often do we find ourselves going back to it to navigate the everyday struggles and complexities of life?

Life is so much more than what’s in the book. I’ve realised that most of the things I’ve been through have shaped my perspective, my growth, and my purpose far more than anything I was taught in a classroom.

    Here’s why.

Life is unique for everyone. Sure, there are foundational lessons we can all lean on, but real growth comes from your personal experiences. It’s crucial to look at your own life and reflect on why certain things happen the way they do.

Let me share a personal example.

    Not Book Smart, Life Smart

This phrase comes from a deeply personal place. I didn’t pass matric with flying colors, and honestly, my high school experience often left me feeling like I wasn’t “smart enough.” But as I walked out those school gates for the last time, I had an awakening: I might not be book smart, but I am life smart.

That realisation became my motto and has guided me ever since.

I’m sharing this today because I discovered my purpose a while back, but I pushed the idea away for many reasons—mainly because of how society expects us to move through life.

The “normal” path is clear: graduate high school, pursue a career, and then build your life. I followed that path, too. But there was always a voice inside me urging me to explore the part of myself that wanted to share, to connect, and to give voice to my thoughts.

Here’s why I’m writing this blog now.

The goal isn’t to ditch the books; it’s to embrace the balance of being both book smart and life smart.

Life will teach you lessons that no textbook ever could. But to truly thrive, we need to take what we’ve learned from books and combine it with the wisdom we gain from life itself.

So, let’s be mindful of life. Let’s reflect on our journeys, learn from our experiences, and grow from the challenges we face.

This is the beginning of a space where I’ll share my thoughts, lessons, and reflections. I hope it inspires you to explore your own path, embrace your uniqueness, and realise that life is a lesson in itself.

Welcome to Not Book Smart, Life Smart.
